Once a familiar site on landscapes across the country, the era of the once essential gasholder has come to an end.
As the last of these majestic structures are being decommissioned and transformed into beautiful new buildings, IGEM is looking back over the history of gasometers in Britain.
Join our one day event as we celebrate the heritage of these monolithic creations and also look at advances in 21st century gas storage.
Supported by National Grid, Northern Gas Networks, Scotia Gas Networks and Wales & West Utilities, we will be looking at how gas storage has changed over the last two hundred years.
Learn about the history of gasholders, their purpose and how they served customers. Gain an understanding of why these extraordinary structures are now being decommissioned and replaced with new solutions for the future of gas. Listen as leading industry experts share their wealth of knowledge.
We will be looking at:
- The age of the gasholders and why it came to an end
- Decommissioning and regeneration
- Environmental preservation
- The importance of recording our history
This event would be of particular interest to anyone with an interest and passion for the history of the gas industry, from those working in demolition and remediation to individuals starting a career in the gas industry who want to find out more about how the sector has developed and changed.
